Cassava storage roots provide food for hundreds of millions of people. But how does the plant build these starch-rich organs?

In our new study, we created detailed gene expression maps of cassava stems and storage roots. We discovered how cassava “switches off” wood formation programs and instead promotes the growth of soft, starch-filled storage cells.

📌 Understanding this process could help develop more resilient and productive cassava varieties – strengthening global food security.
